Hansro: Hi, my name is Elizabeth Hansbrough, and I'm from San Diego, California. I'm a sophomore, and I'm a business major.
French: The Riding Program has been in existence in Sweet Briar almost since Sweet Briar began as a college. We are getting ready to host our 85th annual horse show this spring, and it's, riding is just an integral part of what Sweet Briar is, it was one of the first sports here, and it has remained a mainstay of many of the young women that attend the college. I think that because we are situated in, in such a beautiful area of the foothills of the mountains, in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, and we have 3200 acres of our campus to use for the riders, that makes it a unique opportunity for riders, especially 'cause we seem to draw students from metropolitan areas, they've never had the opportunity to ride outside of a ring.
Marks: Hi, I'm Catherine Marks from Leicester, Pennsylvania. I'm currently a freshman, and I'm studying to be an English major, an Equine Certificate, and pre-law.
French: We do have a few girls that do want to work in the horse industry, and for those girls we have an Equine Studies Certificate Program, which functions a lot like a minor would, but because it pulls coursework from fi-five or six different disciplines, it, we have set it up as a certificate program, and they can choose to focus in the management track, which is really there for the rider that comes in that's maybe not tremendously skilled as a rider, but has a lot of horse sense, and wants to work with horses, and then we have the teaching and schooling track, which is really set out for the student that thinks, "I want to be a professional trainer, teacher, and work in, in that aspect of the horse industry," so they are getting their degree in whatever other area of study, and believe me, they study everything here, from religion, to French, to business, to biology, to pre-vet, to pre-law, you know, whatever, we represent pretty much every major in the college, but they also have this certificate, which gives them some credentials to take out into the horse world as well, so they kind of have a dual-edged educational experience.
Mulvin: Hi, I'm Nell Mulvin, I'm from Virginia Beach, Virginia, and I'm majoring in business.
French: I think one of the things that really makes the Sweet Briar program unique is that we have a program that is an open-door program, and we are welcoming to riders of all levels. We certainly have many of our riders that are interested in competing and want to be serious about that and want to continue in the sport as amateur competitors once they get out of college, but so many of the riders want to take advantage of riding as a recreational opportunity, to get, to, improve their skills, to have a chance to have fun with the horses, to enjoy sharing the companionship with the horse, with people that are, share their passion....
Wilson: Hi, I'm Abby Wilson, and I'm from Lynchburg, Virginia, and I'm majoring in biology.
French: You find that many of our advanced riders are really willing to spend their time and energies with the people who are less skilled participate in the program by taking them out on the trail rides or being involved in the Gymka-, the games day, the Gymkana, to be the advanced riders on the team and help make it happen, so there's a lot of interaction among riders of all skill levels, and I think that that's really important, because it has a good feel of community, and it mirrors what Sweet Briar is in its whole campus.
